About this deal

Let's get your child’s education off to a flying start by making sure they look the part for their first graduation ceremony with our colourful range of elasticated mortarboard caps. European scholars have been wearing caps since the first universities were established in the 11th century, but their early caps looked more like Amelia Earhart’s pilot cap than the square caps we know today. Here, Churchill Gowns Director of Operations, Ruth Nicholls, explores the origins and development of this unusual looking hat.

They initially adopted the pileus—a round, brimless skullcap often worn by monks who had piously shaved their heads. The Tudor bonnet style graduation cap is a round, soft cap that features a tassel attached to a cord that fits around the hat’s circumference. The Italian biretta is a word derived from the Medieval Latin birretum from the Late Latin birrus "large hooded cloak", which is perhaps of Gaulish origin, or from Ancient Greek πυρρός pyrrhos "flame-coloured, yellow". Similarly, early American guidelines for graduation ceremonies mandated that caps be worn at all points throughout the commencement—except during prayer. The square academic cap, graduate cap, cap, mortarboard [1] (because of its similarity in appearance to the mortarboard used by brickmasons to hold mortar [2]) or Oxford cap [3] is an item of academic dress consisting of a horizontal square board fixed upon a skull-cap, with a tassel attached to the centre. For schools where the graduation regalia is rented or borrowed by the student, the tassel might be a part of the rental or provided separately. It is easily recognized by its flattened square shape and a suspended tassel attached to a button on the center-top of the board.

This style, the pileus rotundus, was adopted mainly by university students studying law, medicine, and the sciences. It followed the style of a mortarboard, but used a design that incorporated a triangle instead of the traditional square, hence the name. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag.

Senior class president Emma Olson attends her socially distanced high school graduation at a drive-in theatre in full cap and gown in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Place measuring tape around your head one inch (25mm) above your eyebrows and down to the top of your ear. Roughly 100 years ago, students began moving their tassel from the right side of their cap to the left after they were conferred.Instead of a tassel and button on top of the board, there are two black ribbons that are attached from corner to corner of the board forming a cross. Our UK Mortarboards are made from a high-quality combination of durable woven polyester which gives it rigidness for the all-important traditional hat throwing photograph but is also great for comfort throughout the long day ahead. Recent innovations in the design of graduation caps have occurred at the University of East Anglia, where fashion designer Cecil Beaton created two caps.
