About this deal

Unlike winning with hero cards, which can be destroyed or stolen by other players, once you’ve defeated a monster there is nothing that anyone can do to take it away from you. Due to the low number limit (1-12) and high number changing cards (abilities and modifiers) the game tended to be too fast and snowballed way too much, so we ended up playing to four monster cards instead to make it a bit bigger.

Here to Slay is an adorable and brutal new card game that is perfect for players of all skill levels, whether you’re just entering the world of role-playing games or honing your masterful skills. When playing in a smaller group, we always found challenges to be in desperately short supply, so were delighted to have an extra couple to unleash on our opponents. Modifier cards can be played on your turn or an opponent’s turn to raise or lower roll values, while challenge cards are played in response to an opponent and cause you both to roll the D6s. Any time you want to use an ability, you roll these dice and if the score is high enough, you activate the ability.Ability text on party leaders and monsters is so small that it often goes forgotten, however, which feels like a bit of a flaw. As a side note, if you’re looking for a larger group game, the second expansion (Berserker and Necromancer) would allow a whopping 10 players. In this game, you’ll assemble a full party of heroes to slay dangerous monsters while working to avoid the sabotage of your foes. At higher player counts (I’ve also played at four), it’s much more likely that there will be enough interaction in circulation that anyone getting too far ahead early on should be pinned back by one of the other players.

My wife and I regularly play this game with just the two of us, at which point it’s actually entirely possible for someone to draw four or five different classes off the bat and for the other player not to draw the interactive cards needed to slow them down. It balances the different actions really well (making attacking monsters a high-stakes, all or nothing move) and allows players to have big turns playing lots of cards or draw several cards at once when they start running low. The base game requires you to collect either 3 monster cards, or one hero of every class (6 in total). For example, an 8+ roll is a successful roll and a 5- is a failed roll) Kill three unique monsters, and you win the game! Instead of ‘neigh’ cards to block your opponents from playing their cards, you have challenge cards (the closest equivalent to the Unstable Unicorns method of blocking a player move) and modifier cards which can change the result of dice rolls; characters in your party each have abilities which are activated by rolling above the difficulty number next to the ability on the card – roll equal or above that number and the ability can be carried out. It’s an entertaining blend of Unstable Unicorns’ set collection and ‘take that’ elements, with some RPG style dice rolling and monster bashing thrown in. There’s not a lot of risk riding on a game purchase like this, so if it sounds interesting to you, I say go for it and you won’t be disappointed. Here to slay is a fast-paced, easy to learn game that is perfect for all skill levels, whether you’re just entering the world of role-playing games or honing your masterful skills. Versus another similar card which gave a simple +3 (which is already very broken) with the same limit of 6, which was way too easy to get.
