About this deal

Only the brightest stars are visible to our unaided eyes on moonlit-flooded nights. In the western sky on Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, the very bright star Vega in the constellation of Lyra the Harp will be descending the western sky. At magnitude 0.0, it's the 5th brightest star in the entire sky (not counting our sun). For a short time after sunset on Tuesday, Nov. 14, just above the southwestern horizon, the very slender crescent of the young moon will shine several finger-widths to the left (or four degrees to the celestial southeast) of Mercury. (Image credit: Chris Vaughan/Starry Night) Neptune's westerly motion will be slowing as it readies to complete its retrograde loop next month. The planet will be easiest to see while it is highest in the sky during early evening. Much brighter Saturn will be shining about 24 degrees to Neptune's lower right (or celestial west). In a telescope, Neptune's tiny apparent disk will span 2.3 arc-seconds, but larger telescopes can also show Neptune's large moon Triton. The bright, waxing gibbous moon will hop past Neptune on Nov. 21-22. Skywatching terms The Sega Toys Homestar Flux is the best star projector you can buy right now. We’ve tested and reviewed a range of star projectors and concluded that, because it's a premium model, the Homestar Flux projects an incredibly accurate night sky, with the possibility of buying up to 30 extra disks to project the Milky Way, shooting stars, and the aurora. Are star projectors realistic? Like the Atmosphere Smart Galaxy Projector, you won't get scientific accuracy, but you'll get a fantastic 'insomnia-busting' experience that allows your children (or yourself) to sleep better at night.

Here is a series of the different lunar phases. The four main phases are the new moon, the first quarter moon, the full moon, and the last quarter moon. (Image credit: Chris Vaughan/Starry Night) The northeastern sky on November evenings hosts the bright constellations of Perseus and W-shaped Cassiopeia, with the very bright star Capella positioned below them. Controlling it is simple, using three buttons — power, rotation and sleep timer — and it is powered by a battery which you can charge with a USB-C cable. You're not tied to a power source like with the Homestar Flux, and you don't have to keep changing the batteries as you do with the National Geographic model—again — another happy medium.Next, calculate the total number of stars in the sky. When using a toilet paper roll to calculate the number of stars in the night sky, the number of stars you see in the tube is equal to a fraction of the total number of stars in the sky. To calculate the total number of stars in the sky, multiply your average by 104. Write this number in your data table. For an explanation of how this number was derived, see Counting Stars by Dave Weinrich. Like many other star projectors, there's a 'shooting star' function, although, in our Sega Homestar Flux review, we explained how we'd like this to be at random intervals, or in a different place each time so it isn't as predictable. It has an automatic switch-off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes function. To do this type of experiment you should know what the following terms mean. Have an adult help you search the Internet, or take you to your local library to find out more!

The star Algol in the constellation of Perseus represents the glowing eye of Medusa from Greek mythology. Also designated Beta Persei, it is among the most accessible variable stars for skywatchers. (Image credit: Chris Vaughan/Starry Night) Does the number of visible stars in the night sky change, depending upon the lunar phase? In this experiment you will count the number of stars in the sky during different phases of the moon. Will there be more stars during a full moon, quarter moon or new moon? Terms and Concepts Over the month, Saturn's brightness will diminish a little from magnitude 0.7 to 0.85. Viewed in a telescope during November Saturn will show an apparent disk diameter of 17.4 arc-seconds, and its rings will span nearly 41 arc-seconds. For other uses, see Night sky (disambiguation). Stars in the night sky The Moon is the most often viewed major object in the night sky, while sometimes visible during daytime. The Flammarion engraving, Paris 1888 Repeat nine more times, moving your counting tube slightly to a new view of the sky each time. Write each number in your notebook. You should have ten different counts in your notebook.

The moon's next visit with a planet will be on Tuesday evening, Nov. 21. Tonight, the 67%-illuminated, waxing gibbous moon will shine a palm's width to the lower right of distant blue Neptune. It has a time and date selector, a shooting star function and a sleep timer, and it ships with two disks.★★★½ The Pococo Galaxy Star Projector is a worthy addition to this guide, and it is a good rival to the National Geographic Astro Planetarium and the much more expensive Sega Homestar Flux. During our full Pococo Galaxy star projector review, we found it a good value star projector with decent build and projection quality. With three adjustable ridges on the bottom, you can easily position this projector at three different angles, including upward onto a ceiling. It utilizes both LED and direct laser diode technologies to produce dynamic RGB projections with moving patterns. It's portable and convenient, powered by a USB cable, enabling you to connect it to a computer or a portable battery. The fact that the sky is not completely dark at night, even in the absence of moonlight and city lights, can be easily observed, since if the sky were absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.
